Maps, tokens, illustrations, music, sound effects, fonts and printable models can make a game easier to understand or give it a distinctive atmosphere. None are required, but a dependable collection can save a game master a great deal of preparation time.

Understand the License First

Many assets are offered for private tabletop use, but that does not automatically include livestreams, recorded actual plays, websites, published adventures, crowdfunding pages, convention materials or merchandise. Before using an asset publicly:

1. Read the license attached to the specific file or product, not just the marketplace’s general terms.
2. Check whether commercial use, modification, redistribution and use in streamed or recorded media are permitted.
3. Record the creator, source URL, license, purchase date and required attribution while the information is easy to find.
4. Keep a copy of the license or receipt in the project folder in case the listing later changes or disappears.
5. Do not assume a Patreon subscription grants permanent commercial rights; each creator sets their own terms.
6. When the terms are unclear, ask the creator or choose another asset.

Creative Commons explains the major CC licenses. In brief, BY requires credit, NC restricts commercial use, ND restricts adaptations and SA requires adaptations to use compatible terms. CC0 and public-domain material are usually easiest to reuse, but trademarks, privacy and other rights can still matter.

Maps, Tokens & Map Assets

Many of these creators offer both individual downloads and Patreon or subscription libraries. Their personal and commercial-use terms differ, so check the relevant product before using it outside a private game.

• Game-icons.net — thousands of editable SVG and PNG symbols released under CC BY 3.0; credit the named icon authors.
• OpenGameArt — community art and audio under several open licenses. Check every item’s license and attribution instructions.
• itch.io game assets — a broad marketplace for 2D, 3D, interface and audio packs. Each creator establishes their own terms.
• Wikimedia Commons — enormous collection of freely licensed and public-domain media with item-specific rights information.
• Library of Congress: Free to Use and Reuse — curated historical collections that the Library believes are public domain, have no known copyright or have been cleared for public use.
• Smithsonian Open Access — millions of collection images and data released as CC0 where the Smithsonian can do so.
• The Public Domain Review — curated historical art, books and curiosities with source and rights context useful for props and handouts.

Fonts & Lettering

Fonts are software and have licenses of their own. “Free download” may mean personal use only, and a license for static images or PDFs may not allow redistribution of the font file or embedding it in an app. Avoid copying a game’s logo or trade dress merely because a similar typeface is available.

• Google Fonts — open-source families that can be downloaded and used in print, web and other projects under their listed licenses.
• Font Squirrel — curated free fonts with a license tab and filters for desktop, webfont, ebook and application use.
• DaFont: Gothic and Medieval — a large source of decorative fantasy-adjacent fonts. Licensing varies widely and must be checked font by font.
• Blambot — comic lettering, dialogue and sound-effect fonts with clearly described free and paid licensing categories.

Brushes, Textures & Handout Creation

• Map Effects — fantasy-cartography brushes and stamp packs for Procreate, Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Clip Studio Paint and related software. A small free starter collection is also available.
• RetroSupply Co. Procreate Brushes — paid brushes and textures for ink, print, comic and vintage effects.
• True Grit Texture Supply — paid illustration brushes and texture packs with an emphasis on traditional-media effects.
• ambientCG — CC0 materials, surfaces and HDRIs useful for paper, stone, wood and environmental textures.
• Poly Haven — CC0 textures, HDRIs and 3D models for rendered props, terrain and scenes.

Brush packs often permit finished commercial artwork while prohibiting redistribution of the brushes or source stamps themselves. Fan-art maps included as examples may have narrower terms than the brushes in the same download.

Music, Ambience & Sound Effects

Music from a streaming subscription or YouTube channel may be fine to play at a private table but is not automatically licensed for a livestream, podcast or video. For public work, look specifically for synchronization, broadcast, podcast or commercial-use permission and keep proof of the license.

STL marketplaces commonly mix personal-use, commercial and Creative Commons files. Buying a model often permits printing copies for yourself but not selling prints or redistributing the file. A creator’s merchant tier is usually required for commercial physical sales.

If you are new to printing, check whether a file is designed for resin or filament printing, whether supported and unsupported versions are included, and what finished scale the creator intended.
